Denton, Texas is an incredibly quirky town often being dubbed the ‘lil D’ or the ‘little Austin.’ The town takes such pride in it’s open and friendly personality. After calling Denton home for three years, I would describe it as that wacky uncle you aren’t sure showers every day, but is just the sweetest, most original guy you know. Although the two universities in town might bring the bodies, the downtown square is the heart that brings all those bodies together.
If you live in Denton or are just passing through, you will more than likely find yourself wandering around the town’s beloved square. While wandering, you are probably going to get hungry. Lucky for you, the Denton square has a little something for everyone. The following is a list of town favorite original eateries on the square.
J&J’s is a small pizza joint right on the downtown Denton square. The pizzeria has a very low-key vibe with fun, eclectic pictures and paintings on the wall. Their pizza is downright delicious and very filling, but be willing to wait a good 10 to 15 minutes. Honestly, I could eat J&J’s at least once a week and my husband and I grab a bite there for most of our big occasions!
LSA Burger Co
LSA has the best burgers in Denton, maybe even North Texas! This burger place is a MUST! I recommend grabbing dinner on LSA’s rooftop dining area just as the sun is going down. You can often find live music being played on the balcony that can be heard throughout the entire square. Oh and try the garlic fries, you won’t be disappointed.
Cartwright’s Ranch House
Cartwright’s is definitely a more mom and pop version of IHOP. Breakfast is offered all-day and they have an absolutely wonderful chicken fried steak. Jeremiah swears by the steak and eggs. Country music is always playing and the prices are pretty reasonable. I consider it to be very family friendly and best for a late lunch on a lazy Sunday afternoon.
Rooster’s is a favorite of mine (I have had a birthday dinner here more than once!). Having a ranch of food, I definitely recommend any of the burgers and their fried pickles. One of my fondest memories at Rooster’s is when a couple of my friends accepted the challenge of eating their hottest burger. For this challenge, you have to sign a waiver and they provide milk free of charge. I would say they both successfully at the whole thing, but it was fun to watch. Rooster’s has a fun vibe and offers outdoor seating.
The Abbey Inn Restaurant & Pub
I don’t really know how to describe The Abbey Inn. I have been on multiple occasions and received varying levels of service and food quality, but it just seems like a Denton Square staple. It comes off a bit snazzy, but nobody besides the waiters are dressed up. They have good appetizers, but I wouldn’t say their food is amazing, but I do recommend giving it a shot before hitting up a chain restaurant.
Hannah’s Off the Square
I haven’t had the opportunity to eat at Hannah’s yet, but I have heard only great things. It is a high end Denton restaurant that boasts using locally grown ingredients. Fun Fact: Its building was once a blacksmith shop.
Now you know my top six restaurant recommendations for eating on the Denton Square. I hope you enjoy your stop in the cute little town, I know I did! Stay tuned for more Denton, Texas travel guides.
